Mumbai: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday met with Shiv Sena functionaries to review preparations for the state assembly elections due in October. The Sena, led by Shinde, has appointed observers for 126 constituencies. It has also appointed one officer as in-charge for every three assembly segments. Political observers point out that the party is aiming to win at least 126 seats and may start negotiations for seat allocation within the Rajya Sabha with a view to winning around 126 seats. The Sena contested 15 Lok Sabha seats and won seven. Shinde reiterated that the party’s win-rate has been good and will further improve in the state assembly elections. “We discussed the party’s efforts in strengthening organisation and preparations for the upcoming state assembly elections. In two phases, observers have been appointed for 126 constituencies. “126 have been appointed in the first phase and in-charges have also been appointed,” former Sena MP Hemant Godse said. When seat-allocation negotiations for the LS elections began in the Mahayuti in March, many expected Shinde’s Sena to win only a handful of seats, not even in double digits. But the Sena ended up contesting 15 of Maharashtra’s 48 seats, and Shinde emerged as a tough negotiator, a skilled bargainer and a power centre within the Mahayuti. – Chaitanya Malpakwar
