Australia and New Zealand have been hit by a major cyber outage affecting businesses, government services and airports.

Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages, reported that Australian banks and telecommunications companies including ANZ, Westpac, Visa and Optus were affected.

Australia’s national cyber security coordinator said it was “aware of a major technical outage this afternoon affecting many businesses and services across Australia.”

He added that there was “no information to suggest this was a cybersecurity incident.”

Affected Airlines: “A global technical outage is affecting some airline operations and terminal services,” Sydney Airport said in a post on X, adding that flights were continuing to arrive and depart but there may be some delays throughout the night.

Brisbane Airport said a global IT issue was affecting check-in for “some airlines and some terminal services at the airport”. The airport said flights were continuing to operate.

Supermarket chains: Woolworths and Coles have also reported disruptions to their operations, as has Australia’s largest bank, Commonwealth Bank.

Police and Broadcasting Stations: New South Wales Police also reported problems, and Australia’s national broadcaster ABC said it was “experiencing a major network outage, along with several other media outlets.”

new zealand: Downdetector in New Zealand also reported issues with banks, including ASB. Christchurch Airport also reported IT issues with multiple systems, which “may affect flight operations,” the airport said in a statement.
