Donald Trump delivered a roughly two-hour speech to close the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thursday night.
Introduced by Hulk Hogan, the former president formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination and delivered a solemn reflection on surviving Saturday’s assassination attempt in a record-breaking speech that ended with balloons dropping from the ceiling of the Fiserv Forum amid thunderous applause.
Trump’s wife and former first lady, Melania Trump, also listened to the keynote speech along with vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, and the two shared a kiss onstage at the end.
Mr Trump began by recounting his near-death experience in Pennsylvania five days earlier, saying: “If I had not moved my head at the last moment, the assassin’s bullet would have been perfectly on target and I would not be here tonight.”
He also kissed the helmet of former Fire Chief Corey Comperatore, who died at the Butler rally.
During his speech, Trump laid out many of his frequently repeated claims, including unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen and that the world is on the brink of “World War III,” but he only mentioned Joe Biden by name twice and attacked his record in office.

Eric Trump uses his 6’5″ height to attack transgender athletes
The former president’s second son used his height to his advantage in a speech on the final day of the Republican National Convention to denounce transgender athletes.
Eric Trump claimed his father was fighting for the “soul of America” and listed his grievances against the Biden administration in a speech that touched on energy, the economy, infrastructure, the southern border, Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Middle East, the fentanyl crisis and crime.
He then attacked “male athletes, guys my size, 6’5”, saying they were “playing a women’s sport, swimming” and “destroying the dreams of young girls who spend every moment of their lives training”.

Trump detailed the assassination attempt during his speech at the Republican National Convention, saying it was “painful” to talk about it.
As you may have seen, Donald Trump concluded the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday by delivering the longest speech in convention history after accepting his party’s request for his third consecutive presidential nomination.
And just five days after a .22-caliber bullet nearly took his life, Trump portrayed himself as a triumphant hero as he recounted his brush with death in Pennsylvania.
The former president, wearing a bandage on his ear from a bite caused during the assassination attempt, told the assembled delegates and supporters he was “not supposed to be here” and that it was only by “the grace of Almighty God” that he was on stage in Wisconsin.

Analysis: Trump undermines Republican efforts to revamp image
Over four nights at Donald Trump’s nominating convention in Milwaukee, a host of speakers tried to portray one of the most controversial politicians in recent American history as a loving, caring family man, changed by his nearly assassination at Saturday’s rally.
At the start of his speech Thursday night accepting his party’s presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump appeared to embark on a carefully orchestrated effort to repackage himself as a more modest, unifying figure more palatable to the swing voters who will be crucial to winning the Nov. 5 election.
Trump Washington Examiner Earlier last week, it was reported that after he was near death, he switched to a speech calling for national unity, abandoning an originally planned speech.
And in the first few minutes of his speech, Trump tried to make that happen, saying he wanted to be a president for all Americans, including Democrats, and to heal our divided country. He detailed last Saturday’s assassination attempt, saying it had deeply affected him, and spoke movingly of the supporter killed by the gunman.
“At a time when politics too often divide us, now is the time to remember that we are all one people,” Trump said.
The new Trump appearance lasted just 30 minutes.
Then the Trump that Americans know so well – a man who delights in demonizing others and hurls bombastic insults – reemerged, undermining the message of unity that the Republican National Committee had painstakingly crafted this week.

Some Republicans welcomed Trump’s slightly softer tone at the Republican National Convention.
For conservative voters long weary of former President Donald Trump’s speeches, his somewhat softer tone as he accepted the Republican nomination on Thursday night came as a welcome relief. “He’s gotten a lot better,” Dave Struthers, a 57-year-old farmer from Collins, Iowa, said after watching the opening of Trump’s speech in the basement of his home. “It’s more like he’s having a conversation with the American people than he’s yelling at them.”
Trump has made a number of controversial statements over the years, including saying shoplifters should be shot on sight, suggesting the US commander in chief should be executed as a traitor and mocking the husband of Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi, who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer by a far-right conspiracy theorist.
But on Thursday night in Milwaukee, wearing a white bandage over his right ear where an assassin’s bullet had lodged days earlier, he spoke in a quieter, more subdued tone, at least in the first part of his speech, as he recounted his experience of the shooting and called for an end to discord, division and demonization in national politics.
Still, many of his talking points were familiar, and his rhetoric grew more pointed as the 93-minute speech progressed: He claimed Democrats were destroying America, derided the charges against him as a partisan witch hunt, warned of an “invasion” on the U.S.-Mexico border and claimed, without evidence, that murder rates in Latin American countries were falling because they were sending killers to the United States.
