LUCKNOW: With an eye on the upcoming Maharashtra elections, a delegation of SP legislators has been camping in the state since Friday. The delegation, led by SP’s Maharashtra unit chief and sitting MLA Abu Azmi, met Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday. Though the reason for the delegation’s visit to Maharashtra was “officially” to attend a special felicitation ceremony organised by the party’s Maharashtra unit on Friday, reports suggest the visit was aimed at giving the legislators a first-hand feel of the state’s political battleground and preparing them for an aggressive campaign for the state assembly polls. The SP has so far managed to win only a handful of seats in the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly. However, buoyed by its performance in the 2024 Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections, the party is now eyeing a bigger share of the Indian subcontinent in terms of seat allocation in the Maharashtra elections. The delegation, consisting of Azamgarh MP Dharmendra Yadav, Firozabad MP Akshay Yadav and Badaun MP Aditya Yadav, also included Faizabad (Ayodhya) MP Awadhesh Prasad and Kairana MP Iqra Hasan Chaudhary. “Only a few of our MPs could not come to Maharashtra due to prior commitments. They include party leaders Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav and Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav, who will campaign in Kolkata on Sunday,” a senior SP leader said. The party will focus on the PDA platform in the Maharashtra elections, the SP leader said. Party strategists say the basic makeup of Maharashtra’s voter base will be reflected prominently in the call for PDA and its participation in the SP, especially in constituencies dominated by backward classes, Dalits and minorities. While Abu Azmi described the MPs’ visit as a “new beginning for change”, the celebration also saw the party’s Maharashtra unit sounding the trumpet for the state assembly elections due in November. SP’s Bhiwandi East MLA Rais Shaikh accused the BJP and Shiv Sena of giving stepmotherly treatment to SP workers in the state. He also slammed the Congress and NCP for inducting SP cadres into the state assembly. Maharashtra is a given.
