After three years of racing on the IMS road course, the NASCAR Cup Series will return to the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2024 with a road course winner taking the lead. The 160-lap race on the 2.5-mile oval will have a 50-lap first stage, an additional 50-lap second stage and a 60-lap final stage.
Tyler Reddick, who won the 2022 Cup race at the IMS road course, topped the first round of qualifying and earned the pole position in the 10-car shootout with a time of 181.932 mph. He won at Talladega Superspeedway in 2024.
The Brickyard 400 is the 23rd points-earning race of the 26-race Cup regular season, which then sees 16 drivers compete in 10 playoff races. The series champion will be crowned on Nov. 10.

Kyle Larson wins the Brickyard 400
Kyle Larson won in double overtime to earn his fourth NASCAR Cup Series-leading victory of the season after making a strong push late in regulation to take the lead over Ryan Blaney at the final green flag, with Tyler Reddick passing Blaney for second place.
Larson won his 27th Cup title.
“This is such an honorable place, such sacred ground,” Larson said on the front stretch after parking at the Yard of Bricks. “To all the Indiana fans, I love you all and I know you love me. How about I come back next May and kiss the IndyCar bricks?”
Did Kyle Larson win the Indy and NASCAR double?
Larson was preparing for his Indy/NASCAR dual debut when he finished 18th at the Indianapolis 500 in May, but the weather thwarted his efforts. Rain in Indianapolis delayed the start of the Indy 500 by four hours. Larson ran well, including leading four laps, before receiving a speeding penalty on pit road.
After Indy, he flew to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in the already-running Coca-Cola 600. Justin Allgaier drove Larson’s car, but the Cup race was rained out and Larson was unable to race. Larson received an exemption from NASCAR to pursue the series championship.
