In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won overwhelming votes in Chennai polling stations where at least one district in its jurisdiction contains words like “slum,” “shed,” or “TNSCB (Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board).” In contrast, the BJP dominated in polling stations where at least one district in its jurisdiction contains words like “apartment” or “flat.”
To obtain this information for the three Lok Sabha (LS) seats in Chennai (Chennai North, Central and South), two databases were used. The first database was a list of all polling stations and polling areas where voting took place in the 2024 LS elections. The Election Commission’s ‘Form 20’ data, which lists the party-wise votes cast at each polling station, constituted the second dataset.
These two databases were combined using the polling station numbers of each parliamentary segment as a key.
