Pakistan’s highest run-scoring Test player, Younis Khan, recently shared his thoughts on the impact of Bob Woolmer’s death on Pakistan cricket.

Former Pakistan coach Woolmer passed away during the 2007 ODI World Cup, a tumultuous period for the team, which was facing early elimination from the tournament and suffered a shocking loss with its head coach being found dead in his hotel room in Jamaica.

What does Younis Khan think about Bob Woolmer’s influence?

In a recent interview, Younis Khan expressed the view that Woolmer could have contributed to Pakistan cricket if he had continued with the team.

“I have no doubt that Pakistan cricket would be very different if Ulmer had continued and he would have enhanced it a lot,” Younis told Pakistan TV.

Younis spoke of his close relationship with Woolmer, recalling their regular post-match chats.

“I was very close to Bob (Woolmer) and it was a routine for us to sit together after matches or in the nets and discuss cricket,” he said.

Sadly, the night Woolmer died was an exception, as Younis was ducked out and isolated in the defeat to Ireland.

Younis also expressed disappointment at the lack of support from cricket authorities during the investigation after Woolmer’s death.

“It was like torture for us. I fully understand the responsibility that athletes have as ambassadors for their country, but it should be the other way around… the authorities should also look after us,” he added.

What was the turning point for Younis Khan?

Woolmer’s death not only affected the team, but also deeply impacted Younis’s view of leadership and responsibility within the cricketing world. The stress and lack of support during that period led Younis to reconsider his future as Pakistan captain, which ultimately affected his tenure and the way he approached the role.

Younis Khan’s recollections highlight the positive impact Bob Woolmer had on Pakistan cricket and the void his untimely death has left.
