Paris is preparing to host the Summer Olympics this year.
The Olympics are held every four years and the last Tokyo Games were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took place largely without spectators.

A total of 10,500 athletes representing 206 countries will take part in this year’s Olympics.

Where are the Olympic Games held?
- The event will begin on the Seine on July 26, when dozens of boats will carry athletes down a six-kilometer (3.7-mile) stretch of water.
- The Olympics will be held in a total of 35 venues.
- Most of these venues are in or near Paris, but some matches are held in venues in other cities, such as the Lyon Stadium for football matches and Marseille Marina for sailing events.
- The surfing will take place in Tahiti, French Polynesia, a French overseas territory about 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) from the other venues.

What does this have to do with French politics and elections?
France’s parliamentary elections concluded earlier this month, with no party winning a majority. Shortly after the results, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, from President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, announced he was stepping down.
President Macron accepted Attal’s resignation but his government will remain in a caretaker role to ensure the Olympics run smoothly.
