VADODARA: Despite the Vadodara Municipal Council (VMC) having only seven elected members of the Municipal Council, intra-party infighting was witnessed over the election of the Municipal Council president. The state unit of the Municipal Council recently decided to hold elections for the president in the elected units of the Municipal Council in the state. The election of the VMC president was scheduled for Tuesday and was held at the party office in Ahmedabad. Long before the election was held, the election had led to differences within the party. The decision itself was opposed by three of the seven Municipal Councillors, including outgoing VMC president Ami Ravat, Municipal Councillors Jaha Desai and Harish Patel. All three are Municipal Councillors from the same ward. The three had alleged that the election would lead to division and infighting within the party. Ravat abstained from voting in the election and maintained that the party should consult with the Municipal Councillors and reach a consensus without voting. Desai and Harish later decided to take part in the election at the insistence of party leaders. In what was seen as a token contest, veteran party leader Chandrakant Shrivastava won with four votes, while Desai got two to become deputy leader. Shrivastava was supported by councillors Pushpa Vaghela, Balasaheb Surve and Alka Patel. Harish supported Desai in the election. Vaghela, who was elected from the same committee as Harish and Desai, supported Shrivastava in the election. After the election was over, Ravat congratulated Shrivastava and Desai and said she had written to the party to avoid electoral infighting. However, she added that the seven councillors were united and would continue to fight for the people.
