A dramatic scene captured on video of a whale jumping into a boat and capsizing it off the coast of New Hampshire was recorded on video, but two crew members managed to escape alive, the U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday.
In a series of posts by X, the Coast Guard said the giant mammal struck the 23-foot vessel, effectively throwing it into the Atlantic Ocean, and the crew were rescued by good Samaritans.
According to troopers, the incident occurred near Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire.
Footage shows the whale breaching the water and crashing into the back of the boat, with at least one of the boat’s crew members seen diving into the water.
Collin Yeager, who filmed the video, told NBC News on Tuesday that he and his brother rescued a boater who had been thrown overboard after the whale jumped.
No injuries were reported, according to the Coast Guard.
“We would like to thank the good Samaritans who acted quickly to rescue these two. Bravo Zulu!” the security officer said.
Coast Guard crew members based at Portsmouth reported the whale appeared to be unharmed, the Guard said, adding that the vessel had been towed away.
