WASHINGTON: A confidential Trump campaign document acknowledged on Tuesday that Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is energizing the Democratic base and, given the events of the past few days, there is no doubt that she will drum up support even sooner than the Democratic National Convention.
But a confidential memo from Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio sought to assure Trump supporters that the situation would change in Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s favor as the campaign gained momentum.
“So while in the short term the polls may change and Harris may consolidate the Democratic base a little more, she cannot change who she is or what she has done,” the pollster said.
Harris became the presumptive presidential nominee on Monday, a day after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race and endorsed her as his party’s presidential candidate to run against President Trump.
Less than 50 hours after announcing her candidacy, Harris raised a massive $100 million from supporters, reflecting a surge in her support and a development that has rattled the Trump campaign.
“Many of you have heard me refer to the ‘Harris honeymoon’ that I expect to see in the polls over the next few weeks. As I have explained, this honeymoon represents full mainstream media coverage of Harris. The coverage will be largely positive and will undoubtedly energize Democrats and parts of their coalition, at least in the short term,” Fabrizio said.
“That means we’re going to start seeing polls, particularly national polls, that show Harris catching up or even leading President Trump. Obviously, the situation we’re facing right now is completely uncharted territory and unique in modern history. But some things remain the same,” he noted.
“Due to the events of the past two weeks, particularly the incredibly successful convention, President Trump has seen his approval rating rise in recent polls. This is not surprising given that most candidates historically experience some sort of surge. Given the events of the past few days and the impending selection of her running mate, it is safe to say that Ms. Harris will experience an upswing in the polls sooner than the Democratic National Convention, which will begin to take place over the next few days and continue for some time until the race settles down,” he told the Trump campaign in the memo.
Democrats and the mainstream media will try to promote the polls as evidence that the race has changed, but the fundamentals of the race remain the same, he noted.
“If Democrats reject their candidate and nominate another, voter dissatisfaction with the economy, inflation, crime, open borders, housing costs and, of course, concerns about two foreign wars will not change,” he said.
“Soon, Harris’ ‘honeymoon’ will be over and voters will once again turn their attention to her role as Biden’s partner and co-pilot. Just as importantly, voters will also learn about Harris’ dangerously liberal record prior to becoming Biden’s partner. Harris caused historic inflation (she cast a decisive vote for the IRA), illegal immigration at our southern border (she is Biden’s border secretary), and immigration crime that threatens our families and communities (she released illegal immigrants who committed violent crimes as District Attorney),” Fabrizio said.
