To produce a new leadership, the Indian National Congress will launch a month-long membership drive and will also hold internal elections for its Youth Congress from August 16, Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh State Indian National Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar announced.
The KPCC president told mediapersons on Friday that though filing of nomination papers had begun on July 24, the drive cannot be announced as the Assembly session is in session. “August 2 is the last day for filing nomination papers and vetting will take place from August 3 to 8. Candidates will be finalised on August 9. Based on the number of votes cast, the person who gets the most votes will be elected as the Youth Congress president and the runner-up will become the vice-president. The party will interview the top three candidates,” he said. Membership registration will take place from August 16 to September 16.
Anyone who wishes to become a member of the Youth Congress must register for membership online. Those who register for membership online will have the right to vote for the election of Block, District and State Presidents from the date of registration. A member will have the right to vote for six officers including the State President, State level officers, District President, Block President and General Secretary.
Qualifications
“Youth Congress candidates must be below 35 years of age and it is mandatory for them to bring their voter ID card while voting. Elections will be conducted with transparency. Applicants’ faces will be scanned while registering for membership. The process of producing new leaders across the country has begun and our leader Rahul Gandhi has resolved to groom young leaders,” he said.
“If young people want to become leaders at block, district and state levels, they should acquire leadership qualities and become leaders through elections and not appointments. It has been decided that intra-party elections will be held through the party election committee,” he said.
Gandhi becomes president of the National Congress
To commemorate 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi assumed the post of Indian National Congress leader, a series of programmes will be organised by the party and state governments. An advisory committee chaired by Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil and Indian National Congress leader M. Veerappa Moily will outline programmes to educate the younger generation about the freedom struggle and sacrifices, the KPCC president said.
