Deadpool and Wolverine It’s a lot of stuff, and not all of it works. It’s a (mostly) sincere love letter to superhero movies from 20th Century Fox, and it’s worthy of an R rating. dead pool It’s a sequel, a buddy comedy, a film that both rejects and embraces the storytelling style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and at points, it’s a mix of unexpected and surprising cameos, some of which work a lot better than others.
Cameo appearances in the film will no doubt be much talked about in the coming days and weeks, and it’s easy to see why. (After all, Hugh Jackman isn’t the only iconic comic book movie actor returning for the sequel.) But the presence of characters like Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Chris Evans’ Human Torch, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Dafne Keen’s X-23, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit are sure to be interesting additions to the cast. Deadpool and WolverineWhile they accomplished their mission of saying a final goodbye to Marvel’s Fox era, they’ve given the film too many opportunities to make some of the increasingly tiresome MCU mistakes.
The biggest problem Deadpool and WolverineThe downside to the cameo is that it’s basically used as a shortcut. The movie is trying to sell itself as a sort of conclusion to an era of comic book movies that fans thought ended five years ago, and Garner’s Elektra speaks to that. Teaming up with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine in the film’s second act, she and the other noble Valians insist on giving themselves the closure that TVA, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) and, in a very metatextual sense, Disney stole from them. The problem is, Deadpool and Wolverine It gives the viewer no reason to care about the cameo characters or their shared plight.
The film relies solely on the connections audiences already have with Garner’s Elektra, Tatum’s Gambit, Snipes’ Blade and Keane’s Lola, but the 2005 Electra It has been widely panned by critics and general audiences alike. Gambit In the end, the film was never made. Furthermore, it had been 20 years since Snipes last starred as Blade in a film. Deadpool and WolverineYounger viewers of may not relate as much to his iteration of the character, but rather than taking the time to scrutinize other stripped-down heroes, Deadpool and Wolverine The work relies solely on the viewers’ nostalgia to create it.
The film makes a similar mistake in Wolverine and Laura’s climactic fireside conversation, which serves as an emotional wake-up call for Wolverine. After revealing parts of his tragic past, Wolverine tells Laura that she and her friends put their trust in someone unworthy. “You picked the wrong guy,” he says, to which Laura replies, “You were the wrong guy all along… until you weren’t.” It’s the moment of recognition, insight, and support Logan needs to pull himself out of his spiral of depression, and both Keen and Jackman play it so well that it’s easy to ignore the fact that it doesn’t make sense in the context of the film. Deadpool and Wolverine.
2017 LoganAs Jackman’s Wolverine grows closer to Laura after spending days with her and enduring several major losses that shatter his self-imposed barriers, their bond is ultimately not only emotionally rich, but also hard-earned. Deadpool and WolverineBut Logan soon opens up to Laura because… Reynolds’ Wade tells him that one of his Valians sacrificed himself for her. The Wolverine in the film has nothing to do with Laura, so it doesn’t make sense for him to open up about his deepest wounds so soon. Their conversation is… Deadpool and Wolverine They are trying to profit from the audience’s connection to another film.
If done well, a cameo can actually support a superhero’s on-screen journey (as seen in 2021). Spider-Man: No Way HomeOtherwise, it’s often just a calorie-free diversion that gives you a momentary high. Lately, Marvel seems to have forgotten that distinction. In fact, Deadpool and Wolverine It’s like a longer version of the Illuminati scene. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessHowever, this film is without that Sam Raimi scene and has a delightfully nasty ending.
By cramming Easter eggs, cameos, and jokes at the expense of the MCU. Deadpool and Wolverine The film forgets to give necessary attention to the main story, like the reluctant friendship between our heroes and Wade and Vanessa’s (Morena Baccarin) offscreen breakup, gives X-23 an emotional conversation that should have been a bonding moment between Deadpool and Wolverine, and overall relies on multiple previous non-Deadpool films to do a fair amount of heavy lifting. Unfortunately, this is a mistake Marvel has been making lately, and it’s holding the entire MCU back.
(Dogpool is innocent, though.)
