US Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign said Sunday that it had raised $200 million in the week since she became the Democratic presidential nominee, adding a total of 170,000 new volunteers in the week. Last week, US President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris against Donald Trump in the Nov. 5 election.

“Since our campaign launched, @KamalaHarris has raised $200M, 66% of which has come from new volunteers. We’ve added 170,000 new volunteers,” Harris’ deputy manager, Rob Flaherty, posted on her official X account.

A Reuters poll suggests there will be a tight race between Harris and Trump, who has so far won the support of nearly all of the Democratic National Convention’s delegates, a move that could help her secure the party’s presidential nomination next month.

The 40-year-old astrologer attracted widespread attention when he accurately predicted the exact date that 81-year-old Joe Biden would withdraw from the presidential campaign trail.

“Our vice president is the interim candidate and the formal vote is scheduled for August 1st,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said on MSNBC.

Campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu said Harris had “the best week I’ve seen in politics in the last 50 years,” adding that “it’s going to be a close race.”

Ms Harris’s appearance energised a campaign that had been struggling with doubts about whether Mr Biden could beat Mr Trump and even whether he would be able to run the government properly if re-elected.

Biden recently announced he was stepping down from the presidential race due to his age and health concerns, but has vowed to continue serving until the end of his term on January 20, 2025.
