With one medal already secured, American swimming star Katie Ledecky is the overwhelming favorite to win the 1,500m freestyle and aim to win her first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games.
The 27-year-old Ledecky was undefeated in the 1,500 meters during her professional career, winning five world titles and becoming the first athlete to win Olympic gold in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Due to the length of the race and the endurance required, the 1,500m freestyle heats and finals will be held over two days, with heats taking place on Tuesday. Steve Gardner
PARIS — Pollution in the Seine forced Olympic organizers to postpone the men’s triathlon on Tuesday, threatening to derail plans for a massive $1.5 billion cleanup to allow athletes to compete in a notoriously filthy waterway that runs through the heart of the city, a centerpiece of the Paris Olympics.
Tests have shown that water quality in the Seine is still below acceptable standards on race day, according to a statement from Paris 2024 and World Triathlon. The men’s race has been postponed to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday (4:45 a.m. ET), with the women’s race scheduled for 8 a.m.
Both triathlons, which must undergo water quality testing to meet swimming standards set by World Triathlon Federation, will remain on the original alternative competition date of Friday, August 2, a World Triathlon Federation statement said. Kim Helmgard

Olympic Gymnastics Today: What to Look Out For
Today was the day of the women’s team final, and the U.S. had it circled on the calendar. In Tokyo, Simone Biles struggled on the vault and withdrew from the team competition. The U.S. won the silver medal behind Russia (whose team name was ROC). This is the first time since the 2010 World Championships that the U.S. has failed to win a team title at a world championship or an Olympic Games. Russia cannot compete as a team at the Paris Olympics. Led by Biles, the U.S. will win the gold medal at the 2023 World Championships, followed by Brazil (silver) and France (bronze).
PARIS — Hours before the men’s gymnastics team final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Steven Nedorosic solved a Rubik’s Cube in 9.32 seconds. Rubik’s Cubes are his hobby, and the time was pretty impressive, given the circumstances. “This is a good sign,” he wrote on Instagram.
That was certainly true.
In perhaps the most pressure-filled situation in men’s gymnastics — the final performance in the final rotation of the Olympic final — Nedorosik delivered a masterful performance Monday night, delivering a smooth, confident pommel horse routine to earn the U.S. men’s gymnastics team the bronze medal.
