Megan Deschatretz, MS, CDN, R.D., nutritional advisor to Hiruma, also points out that ginger, especially when consumed as a tea, “can ease indigestion and speed up stomach emptying,” making it effective at reducing bloating.
Other studies have shown that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, can balance blood sugar levels, and lower cholesterol. Additionally, some research suggests that ginger may help prevent bacterial and fungal infections and may be helpful for chronic digestive problems.
Why does it seem to help boost immunity? “Citrus juice, like the one often found in ginger shots, is an excellent source of vitamin C, which benefits the immune system through its antioxidant properties and metabolizing nutrients in the body,” explains O’Meara.
Their high vitamin C and antioxidant content also help promote hair growth and skin health. “Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, and lemons are rich in vitamin C, which helps stimulate collagen production,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist, celebrity chef, and founder of Just Add Water and Culinary Alchemy. “Collagen is a key component of healthy hair protein, and antioxidants help protect hair from oxidative stress, keeping it looking youthful and lustrous.”
How often should I take a ginger shot?
Personally, I have a ginger shot every morning, but after breakfast instead of first thing in the morning. “The heat and warmth of the ginger shot can cause heartburn in some people, so I recommend taking it with a meal,” agrees O’Meara.
How often should you have a ginger shot? “If you want to have a ginger shot, have one as often as you like,” says O’Meara. Again, I have one every day, but it’s really down to preference.
Do ginger shots help with weight loss?
Technically, while some studies claim that ginger can help with weight loss, O’Meara says there is a “lack of human research to suggest that drinking a ginger shot will help you lose weight.”
“While we don’t know if drinking ginger shots will help you lose weight, we do know that they won’t undermine a healthy diet and active lifestyle that can help you manage your weight,” she explains.
Finally, keep in mind that while ginger shots have health benefits, they’re not a substitute for a balanced diet. “If you’re looking to jump-start your day with a ginger shot in the morning, it’s a great option,” O’Meara says. “But to really jump-start your metabolism, it’s best to eat a breakfast of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.”
Can I make ginger shots at home?
“You can make ginger shots at home with a blender or buy them pre-made,” O’Meara says. “The only difference is the ingredients you use. If you make them at home, you can control the amount of sugar you add to the product and tailor it to your taste.”
