MAYSVILLE, Ky. (WXIX) – A Maysville business owner was forced to halt renovations to build a future restaurant after a fire broke out Sunday.
Wild Bull Saloon has been closed since the coronavirus pandemic, but owner Tommy Henderson told FOX19 NOW there were plans to reopen it as a steakhouse in just a few months.
But things got worse.
Just this weekend, a fire with thick smoke and flames broke out in what was once the Wild Bull Saloon.
“You work for two years to make something happen and then overnight you lose it,” he said.
That night, Henderson not only lost his job, he also lost his home. He lived on the second floor in an apartment directly above the restaurant.
“And I was up the road here, about a mile and a half to another store, and I was told this place was on fire,” the business owner said. “I saw it. Most of the time, it looked like it came out of the backyard of a business here.”
The deck of the building, which was part of Henderson’s apartment, was completely destroyed. He plans to stay at a hotel for the time being.
“There’s no insurance in that place. So my mind was like, ‘Oh, we have this much money in this place, get ready to lose everything.’ So I felt like I was having a bit of an anxiety attack,” he explained.
This isn’t the first time Mr. Henderson has had problems with his business.
When he bought this place in 2017, he turned it back into a nightclub. But when the coronavirus hit, his business shut down.
Despite the uphill battle, Henderson was inspired by some restaurants in Ohio and wanted to give it another try.
“Then a few years ago, I decided to start working again and see if I could build a steakhouse.”
He was only six months away from opening his new and improved restaurant, but since the fire he doesn’t know if his vision will become a reality.
He said the fire caused $75,000 worth of damage.
“It’s pretty disgusting. So I just need a break, probably for a few more years.”
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
FOX19 NOW has reached out to fire officials for more information.
