GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Greenville resident John Barclay headed to the polls Tuesday morning.

“I actually work in the emergency services and I can’t leave work on Election Day, so I’m here to vote early,” Barclay said.

Mr. Barkley is an undecided voter who says he did not vote straight after studying the candidates and issues thoroughly.

“With inflation rising and the cost of living getting higher every year, we need to vote on our budget,” Barclay added.

According to Professor Jason Husser, who organized the Elon poll, 4% of undecided voters like Barclay could decide who wins in a 46%-46% race between Harris and Trump. That’s what it means.

“What we know is that a lot of undecided voters are really focused on the economy right now, and if that undecided voter is thinking about the economy, If so, that could lead to Donald Trump being removed from office. If they’re thinking about abortion, confidence in the candidate, candidate’s suitability for office, etc. , that could fall apart against Mr. Harris,” Husser explained.

He also noted that historically North Carolina has not been a purple state.

“What’s changed from red to purple is immigration from other parts of the United States. North Carolina is growing, and a lot of the reason behind that growth is that for people coming from places like New York, Because it’s an attractive place to live,” Husser said.

In the gubernatorial race, Josh Stein had a favorability rating of 48%, while Mark Robinson had a favorability rating of 28%. Not only is Mr. Robinson deeply unpopular among Democrats, he also lags Mr. Trump’s support among Republicans and independent voters.

According to Elon’s poll, the economy, immigration and health care are the three main topics voters are paying attention to in the election.
