LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A medical marijuana operator in Kentucky has been awarded a license to begin operations after a drawing was held Monday.

Twenty-six applicants for medical cannabis cultivation and processing licenses were selected. These licenses are for growers and processors, not dispensaries. Cultivators grow and treat medical cannabis.

Available categories include 10 Tier I tiller licenses, four Tier II tiller licenses, two Tier III tiller licenses and 10 processor licenses, according to a news release.

Processors process raw materials into usable products, such as edible products. Hundreds of cultivator and processor license applications were received, and 16 cultivators and 10 processors will be selected through a lottery. Selected applicants will be required to pay the license fee to the Medical Cannabis Authority within 15 days.

“Medical marijuana cultivation, processing, testing, and distribution all happen right here in Kentucky,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release. “Today’s Lottery will help ensure these medical cannabis businesses can operate, ensuring Kentuckians with serious medical conditions receive safe, affordable medical relief and the options they deserve as soon as possible.” You will be able to obtain it.”

The state held a lottery on Monday to select growers and processors from thousands of applicants.

Across the three tiers of cultivators, 584 business license applications were submitted and for processors, 334 business license applications were submitted.

“The lottery system is an approach taken after considering best practices in other states with established medical marijuana markets,” Sam Flynn, executive director of the Office of Medical Cannabis, said in a news release. “From our inception, our primary goal has been to make the application and selection process as fair and transparent as possible. The Kentucky Lottery Company has been doing this for many years, and we believe in Thank you for your professionalism and support in our efforts. “

In Kentucky, dispensary licenses are issued in 11 regions. Each pharmacy region has four pharmacy licenses.

However, Fayette and Jefferson counties have two additional licenses.

The lottery for dispensing pharmacy licenses will be announced separately at a later date. To qualify for medical cannabis starting January 1, 2025, a possessor must have a medical condition such as cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, or other intractable seizure disorder, as well as multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, chronic nausea or other conditions. Must have a qualifying medical condition such as disease.

“Today’s events continue to move us forward as we approach January 1, 2025, when patients will be able to apply for medical marijuana cards,” Cabinet Secretary of Health and Family Services Eric Friedlander said in a news release. said. “Judging by the number of applications we have received, the demand for this market is undeniable and we are excited about the opportunities it presents for those in need.”

There are four companies around the Louisville area, including Synapse Remedies LLC and KYP LLC in Jefferson County, and Elevated Essence LLC and One Leaf Technologies LLC in Bullitt County.

The 26 businesses selected by lottery are as follows.
