Senior Sindh Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader, Sharjeel Inam Memon, expressed strong opposition to any canal projects on the Indus River, declaring that he would fight against such initiatives until his last breath.

Addressing a press conference, Memon stated that the nation must unite to strengthen Pakistan and tackle the challenges it faces, urging the public to put aside their differences on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, Express News reported.

Memon’s statement followed a recent series of terrorist incidents, where innocent civilians were murdered in bus attacks. He praised the sacrifices of the military and security forces, calling for continued efforts to protect the nation.

The senior minister reiterated the PPP’s stance on the controversial canal projects, emphasising that the party would demand Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issue a clear statement on halting such initiatives. “We will not allow any canals on the Indus River, and I urge the Prime Minister to announce the cancellation of the projects on April 4,” Memon said.

Memon also took aim at critics, accusing some of being influenced by external forces, specifically naming those allegedly backing India’s RAW intelligence agency.

He stressed that meaningful dialogue could only take place with those who genuinely support Pakistan.

Highlighting the importance of media freedom, Memon reiterated the PPP’s position on press rights. “PPP has always worked for the rights of journalists,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring press freedom and will continue to stand firm against any unjust treatment of media personnel.”

Additionally, Memon criticised the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), while affirming that PPP does not support laws that curtail media freedom or allow the spread of false news.

Addressing internal issues, Memon called for political dialogue in Balochistan while stressing that terrorists should be dealt with firmly.

He concluded by emphasising the PPP’s stance on human rights and media liberty, asserting that the party would continue to fight for these principles.
