Qureshi vows to lead anti-canals protest from jail

LAHORE:

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi criticised his own party’s leadership over disarray in their ranks, saying that those party leaders, who were imprisoned when they saw the leadership outside pointing fingers at each other.

Talking to the media persons after hearing of a case in connection with May 9, 2023 violence, said that nothing was being done by the outside leadership, compared to what he was doing from inside the prison. He said that he would lead a protest against the Indus canals in Umerkot on April 14 and 15 from inside the jail.

On Tuesday, Qureshi had called on the party leadership to focus on meaningful action for those imprisoned, instead of getting distracted by internal mudslinging and blame game. He repeated his statement on Wednesday, saying that those who had been in jail were looking towards the PTI’s leadership outside the jail.

“I personally appeal them to maintain unity among them and show decency, while differing with each other. They are hurt in jail when they see them, pointing fingers against each-other,” he said.

In his media talk, Qureshi accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of “betraying the people of Sindh” on the canals issue. “PPP’s tears are noting but crocodile tears. It preferred to keep mum when IRSA [Indus River System Authority] issued certificate of the water’s availability,” he charged.

Earlier, Qureshi appeared in the ATC in six cases related to May 9 violence. The court adjourned the proceedings of his post-arrest bail application until Thursday (today).
