At least three passersby were killed and 14 were injured, including three police personnel on Thursday as a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) struck near a police vehicle in Wana Bazaar, South Waziristan.

The blast occurred near Shakai Stand, police officials confirmed, adding that unidentified assailants also opened fire following the incident.

According to SHO Shakai, one civilian was initially reported dead and five others injured, including a police officer. The casualty count later rose as authorities provided updated figures.

The injured have been shifted to Wana Headquarters Hospital, said District Police Officer Tahir Shah.

Police have launched an investigation and cordoned off the area.

Earlier, at least seven people died while 21 others were wounded when a bomb exploded in the offices of the local Peace Committee in Wana in the South Waziristan district, police and district administration officials said.

Police have yet to determine whether it was a suicide blast or a remote-controlled explosion. They said that the bomb went off when a meeting of the Shakai Tehsil Peace Committee was going on in the lower bazaar area, with its chairman, Saifur Rehman, in the chair.

“A local tribal elder, Saifur Rahman, was holding a jirga at his guesthouse when a bomb exploded, killing at least seven people while injuring 21 others,” Usman Khan, a local police official, told AFP. “The nature of the blast is not clear yet,” he added.
