Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday took notice of the flood situation in Karachi and parts of Sindh, directing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to extend full support in relief efforts.

In a statement from the PM Office, the premier called for coordinated action between the NDMA and the Sindh Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to ensure effective rescue and rehabilitation operations.

“The federal and Sindh governments are fully mobilised to deal with the flood situation,” he said, stressing that helping affected families should be the top priority. He also expressed sorrow over the deaths caused by flooding in Gadap stream, where multiple citizens were swept away in the torrential current.

He instructed all relevant authorities to expedite the search for missing persons and ensure timely assistance for flood victims. “The awareness campaign should be further activated to inform the public about the flood situation to protect citizens,” he added.

The PM lauded the ongoing rescue operations being carried out by Rescue 1122, the Pakistan Army, and the Rangers in Karachi, where several areas remain submerged due to the recent downpour.

He also called for swift action to restore damaged roads and communication networks across affected regions, warning that delays could hamper both relief delivery and mobility for emergency services.

Karachi has been hit by yet another spell of intense monsoon rains, with floodwaters entering residential areas, damaging infrastructure, and overwhelming the city’s drainage system. Emergency teams are on alert, while several key routes have been closed or diverted due to rising water levels.

In Gadap Town’s Konkar Nadi, a rickshaw and two vehicles with seven people onboard were swept away by floodwater. So far, rescue teams have retrieved four bodies, including a woman and her son, while the search continues for the missing.

Thado Dam overflowed, sending torrents towards the M–9 motorway—now cleared. The Superhighway near Al Habib Restaurant was submerged, forcing a full traffic disruption between Karachi and Hyderabad.

The National Highway & Motorway Police confirmed floodwater crossed the motorway boundary, while barriers were removed to allow controlled flow.

Low-lying suburbs near Super Highway saw water depths of up to five feet. Rescue teams, deployed rapidly, are working to evacuate residents. “The central barrier of the motorway has been removed to divert the flood and reopen traffic,” said a CM House spokesperson.

Flood surges have ravaged Saadi Town, Malir, Sohrab Goth, Machchar Colony, Khamisu Jhokhio Goth, and New Karachi. There are reports that many vehicles were swept away by the floodwater. Rescue 1122, Edhi Foundation, and Rangers teams are in the affected areas to extend helping hand to the stranded people.
