Court questions animal welfare standards, funding use after petition cites poor conditions at Peshawar Zoo

A petition was filed regarding the issues faced by animals and the provision of facilities at the Peshawar Zoo. The Peshawar High Court has issued the written order from the previous hearing.

According to the order, the court has sought a five-year audit report of all zoos and wildlife parks across the province.

The written order directs that the Wildlife Department and the Livestock Department submit audit reports for the past five years.

The court ordered that details be provided on how much funding was allocated and how much was spent on zoos and wildlife parks during this period.

The Wildlife Department has also been asked to clarify whether a mechanism exists for allocating funds for animal feed and whether those funds are being used properly.

The order further states that the Livestock Department must submit a report on veterinary care and treatment provided to animals.

The court questioned whether animals at the zoo are actually being given medical treatment and directed that a report on the matter be submitted.

Additionally, the departments have been instructed to submit a report on privately kept domestic animals within homes.

The court inquired why a previously constructed park within the zoo premises is not being utilized and directed all concerned parties to submit a report on this issue as well.

All parties have been ordered to submit their reports by November 17.

The petitioner, Advocate Shahid Ali Yiftai, stated that animals at the Peshawar Zoo are being fed poor-quality food and deprived of basic facilities.

He added that animals are being kept in tight cages with no proper cleanliness arrangements in place.

The petitioner’s counsel emphasised that animals, too, have fundamental rights, and it is the responsibility of the zoo administration to ensure their welfare and provide adequate facilities.
