Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Fauzia Viqar

KARACHI:

Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment, Fauzia Viqar, has expressed concern over the growing number of workplace harassment complaints, calling the trend alarming.

Speaking at a media talk on workplace harassment held at the Karachi Press Club, she emphasised that efforts are underway to address the challenges faced by women in professional environments.

Viqar strongly condemned a recent statement by the Vice Chancellor of Federal Urdu University of Arts Science and Technology regarding women, calling it “regrettable and unacceptable.” She said questioning women’s intellectual capabilities is unjust and undermines their contributions.

She shared that the Federal Ombudsperson’s offices are currently operational in all provincial capitals, as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan, where citizens’ grievances are being addressed. Over the past 10 months, more than 1,300 complaints have been received, of which 73% have been resolved, and penalties have been issued in 50% of the cases.

Highlighting the nature of harassment, Viqar noted that complaints often involve staring, catcalling, and unwelcome advances. She added that in cases where women are wrongfully terminated, the department ensures their reinstatement. If salaries are withheld, the Ombudsperson’s office has the authority to restore them.

In private institutions, action is taken with the cooperation of police and administrative authorities. Viqar reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting women’s rights and ensuring safe workplaces across Pakistan.
