Interior minister directs city services to be improved, focusing on cleanliness and removal of encroachment from roads

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chairs a high-level meeting on law and order and public services with senior officials in Islamabad on March 13, 2026.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced that Islamabad will gradually reduce its 109 city entry points to 25 and make the Red Zone fully operational as part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance security and public services in the federal capital.

The decisions were taken during a meeting in Islamabad on Friday attended by the chief commissioner of Islamabad, Islamabad inspector general of police, deputy commissioner, DIGs, SSPs, SPs, and all assistant commissioners.

The minister directed the development of an effective plan to implement these measures, stressing that security at checkpoints and entry points must be foolproof. “Checkpoints should be assessed for their real utility, not just their presence,” he added.

Naqvi underscored that maintaining law and order in Islamabad is a top priority. Measures to improve city services were also ordered, including enhanced cleanliness and the removal of encroachments, with Assistant Commissioners assigned responsibility for overseeing these tasks.

He further instructed that unnecessary items be cleared from major roads immediately and assured full administrative support for city development and law enforcement.

Security was stepped up today as the central Youm-ul-Quds rally commenced following Friday prayers. More than 3,500 Islamabad Police officers and personnel were deployed across the city, and a traffic advisory was issued.

According to Islamabad Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Jawad Tariq, strict security measures have been implemented around all mosques and imambargahs, including Faisal Mosque. Special arrangements were also made for Youm-e-Quds processions throughout the capital.

“Checking at all entry and exit points of the city has been further tightened, and special checkpoints have been established,” the DIG said, adding that protecting citizens’ lives and property remains the police’s top priority.

Authorities have issued a detailed traffic diversion plan as part of security arrangements, with several roads, including routes leading to the Red Zone, closed in anticipation of protests following Friday prayers.
