Iran will completely shut the strategic Strait of Hormuz if US President Trump executes threats to target Iranian energy facilities, the country’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement on Sunday.

Trump on Saturday threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if Tehran did not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48-hours, suggesting a significant escalation barely a day after he ‌talked about “winding down” the war, now in its fourth week.

In their Sunday statement Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also said companies with US shares will be ‘completely destroyed’, if Iranian energy facilities were targeted by Washington and energy facilities in countries that host US bases will be ‘lawful’ targets.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump threatened Iran to attack its power plants if strait of Hormuz was not fully restored within 48 hours. The statement added dramatic situation in war escalation entering into fourth week.

The Strait of Hormuz remains open to all shipping except vessels linked to “Iran’s enemies”, Iranian media reports ‌published on Sunday quoted Iran’s representative to the UN maritime agency as saying.

Ali Mousavi’s comments came from an interview published on Friday by Chinese news agency Xinhua, before US President Donald Trump’s threat.

The threat of Iranian attacks during the US-Israeli war on Iran has kept most ships from getting through the narrow strait, the conduit for around a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, threatening a global energy shock.

Mousavi, who is also Iran’s ambassador to ‌the UK, was also quoted as saying that Tehran would continue to cooperate with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to improve maritime safety and protect seafarers in the Gulf, adding that ships not belonging to “Iran’s enemies” could pass the strait by coordinating security and safety arrangements with Tehran.

On Feb 28, 2026, US and Israel preemptively attack on Iran. Iran fired drones and missiles on Isreal and US military basis and installations in UAE, Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries.

Tehran also disrupted oil tankers at the Strait of Hormuz, an energy artery responsible for 20 per cent oil and gas flow from Gulf to other parts of the world.

The closure of Hormuz causing a near standstill in commercial shipping and a surge in energy prices worldwide. It has also signalled plans to impose tolls or restrictions on vessels transiting the strait, leveraging its strategic position amid the conflict.

The disruption has heightened fears of a prolonged energy shock and broader regional instability, with global powers weighing military and diplomatic options to restore access to the key waterway.
