RAWALPINDI:

Bushra Bibi, the wife of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, underwent a medical examination at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after complaining of pain in her right eye, jail sources told The Express Tribune on Sunday.

Officials said she was examined by Dr Muhammad Arif Khan, head of the ophthalmology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) at Central Jail Rawalpindi at around 2pm on Saturday.

According to Jail sources, the medical report stated that she had been experiencing blurred vision and black spots in her right eye for the past 11 days. She also reported seeing flashes in the dark and suffering from headaches.

The examination diagnosed posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in her right eye. The report also identified myopia and astigmatism.

The examining doctor prescribed eye drops and medication, along with the use of glasses, and recommended a follow-up medical check-up after four weeks, sources added.

In late January, Imran also underwent a minor eye procedure. Five days later, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said that doctors at PIMS had conducted another examination of his eyes and, after obtaining his written consent, carried out a minor medical procedure that lasted around 20 minutes.

Amid growing concerns over the deterioration of Imran’s eyesight in custody, the Supreme Court took up the matter following a report submitted by the former prime minister’s lawyer, Salman Safdar. Acting as amicus curiae, Safdar reported that Imran had lost 85% of vision in his right eye and expressed dissatisfaction with the medical facilities available at Adiala Jail. The report noted that the former prime minister had requested urgent access to specialist doctors.

Earlier in March, another medical check-up was conducted at Adiala jail, after which PIMS stated that Imran had shown significant improvement in his vision following his second dose of an intravitreal anti-VEGF injection.

Imran has been in custody since August 2023, serving a sentence at Adiala Jail in a £190 million corruption case.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced on December 20, 2025, to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-II case, which centres on allegations that the couple unlawfully retained a Bulgari jewellery set gifted by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

They were convicted under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs164.25 million on each of them.
