ISLAMABAD:

The government has assured its coalition partners that petroleum prices will be reduced once the prevailing situation normalises, offering a measure of relief amid rising fuel costs and growing economic pressure on consumers across the country.

The assurance came during a joint parliamentary party meeting of the ruling alliance held at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, where key coalition leaders were taken into confidence over recent price adjustments.

According to officials, the ministers told participants that the increase in petroleum prices was driven by extraordinary circumstances, while emphasising that steps would be taken to pass on relief as soon as conditions improve.

The meeting was attended by leaders from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and other allied parties.

Those present in the meeting included Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, along with several senior lawmakers.

During the session, the finance and petroleum ministers briefed parliamentary leaders on the current situation, outlining measures taken to ensure uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and manage the impact of external pressures on the domestic market.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said coalition partners expressed confidence in the federal government’s policies and endorsed its handling of the situation.

Chaudhry added that further measures related to petroleum pricing were also discussed, with ministers reiterating their commitment to easing the burden on consumers at the earliest possible stage.

The meeting also reviewed contingency planning and coordination among coalition partners to respond to evolving economic conditions, with an emphasis on maintaining stability and public confidence.

The participants underscored the importance of a unified political approach in addressing economic challenges, while supporting measures aimed at stabilising prices and ensuring consistent supply chains.

Officials have maintained that once the situation returns to normal, the government would move to reduce petroleum prices, signalling a potential rollback in fuel costs if external pressures subside.
