Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday paid special tribute to the framers of the Constitution, saying that the unanimously adopted Constitution of Pakistan on April 10, 1973 laid the foundation of a parliamentary democratic system of governance in the country and established a strong institutional framework for the state of Pakistan.
He said the Constitution was a sacred contract between the people and the state, which defined the legal, moral, and administrative rights and responsibilities of both.
“Today, we are celebrating the approval of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with a spirit of national pride,” he said in his message on Constitution Day.
The Constitution of 1973 is the guardian of the fundamental human rights of all citizens of Pakistan. This constitutional document not only elaborates these fundamental human rights in detail but also ensures a legal framework for their provision, the prime minister remarked.
The Constitution of 1973 is a shining symbol of the Federation of Pakistan and national unity, he said adding that all federating units of Pakistan are fulfilling their constitutional roles effectively for national cohesion and overall economic development and prosperity, and are determined to work for a bright future.
The prime minister said that this admirable unity reflected the blessings of Almighty Allah on this God-gifted country.
“We bow our heads in gratitude to Almighty Allah for the honor and dignity bestowed upon Pakistan. Pakistan, holding its head high among the nations of the world, will, God willing, continue its journey of progress and prosperity,” he remarked.

Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Chairman said the Constitution of 1973 is a symbol of Pakistan’s democratic identity, national unity and constitutional supremacy.
In his message on Constitution Day on Friday, he said April 10, 1973, was a historic day when the nation unanimously adopted a Constitution that strengthened the federation, protected provincial rights and created balance among state institutions. He added that it continues to guide the political system and ensures democratic continuity. The chairman said the Constitution not only strengthens the state system but also guarantees the protection of people’s basic rights.
He said the Constitution is not just a legal document but represents the nation’s collective thinking, political wisdom and commitment to democracy. He stressed that respect for the Constitution, rule of law and democratic values is essential for the country’s progress and stability. Gilani paid tribute to the 1973 Parliament and its leadership, especially Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for playing a key role in building consensus on the Constitution.
He said Bhutto set aside differences and worked in the national interest to create a strong constitutional framework. He said the Constitution ensures justice for the poor, representation of women, equal rights for minorities and inclusive lawmaking for all sections of society.
It also defines the powers of institutions and promotes transparency and accountability. The Senate chairman said Parliament remains committed to improving the lawmaking process to make it more effective and people-focused. He also appreciated Pakistan’s active diplomacy, saying it has improved the country’s image globally.
He urged political parties to put national interest above differences and remain united, adding that respect for the Constitution is key to stability and progress. Gilani also called on the youth to understand the Constitution, their rights and responsibilities, and to play an active role in the country’s development, saying an informed youth is vital for Pakistan’s future.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the Constitution serves as the foundation of democracy, safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring the stability of state institutions.
He said that upholding the Constitution with unity and integrity is essential for the nation’s progress and prosperity.
Ayaz Sadiq expressed these views while conveying his heartfelt felicitations to the nation on the occasion of Constitution Day to be observed on Friday (April 10).
He emphasized the historic importance of April 10, 1973, when Pakistan adopted a consensus Constitution.
He said this achievement as a defining moment in the country’s democratic history, laying a solid foundation for national unity, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and strengthening institutional stability.
Ayaz Sadiq highlighted that respect for the Constitution, adherence to the rule of law, and the continuity of democratic practices remain essential for sustainable national progress.
He paid tribute to the members of the 1973 National Assembly and the political leadership of that era, who set aside differences to establish a constitutional framework that continues to guide governance and democratic institutions in Pakistan today.
Ayaz Sadiq stressed that the Constitution is the supreme law of the country, defining the powers and responsibilities of state institutions, outlining the rights of citizens, and ensuring accountability at every level.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Parliament to enhance legislation, improve governance and promote transparency for the welfare of the people.
Highlighting the importance of national unity and strong governance in safeguarding constitutional values, he said that a collective commitment to democratic principles and the Constitution strengthens Pakistan’s resilience, stability, and progress.
He said that the current government’s proactive diplomatic efforts have brought pride to the nation, advancing Pakistan’s international standing and reinforcing its sovereignty.
Underlining the importance of political cooperation, he urged all political forces to work together in the national interest, drawing inspiration from the collaborative spirit of the 1973 Assembly.
He also emphasized the need to educate the younger generation about the Constitution and encourage them to play an active role in upholding democratic principles and contributing to national development.
Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah has also extended his congratulations to the nation.
