Being a part of the Pokémon community means seeing amazing fan art and creative theories on an almost daily basis. Whether you’re interested in the games, cards, or show, there are tons of artists on almost every platform putting out content that resonates with you.
One exciting trend that has recently emerged online, highlighted by X artist n0rtist, is the idea of ability-based Pokémon forms, which explores how the natural abilities of Pokémon such as Torrent or Thick Fat could theoretically influence their design and aesthetic.
Other Pokémon creators quickly jumped on the trend and it has been a hot topic within the community ever since, with many praising the original artist and saying “I really love this concept” in the process.
In the original post, Breloom takes center stage, with Effect Spore Breloom sporting a poisonous veil and Poison Heal Breloom sporting a subtle poison apple design.
The Technician’s design is much more geometric and angular than Breloom’s standard shape, with one fan comparing it to a Xenomorph, stating, “I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but it’s creepy. It reminds me of Alien.”
Another artist named birdoodles showed off his own take on the creative Pokémon trend, choosing the ever-popular Piplup as his Pokémon.
The piece, which literally depicts the power of the brave penguin, was well received by other Pokémon fans in the community, with one person praising the artist, saying, “So cute. I love how competitive he is.”
While some Pokémon art trends are intriguing yet unrealistic, this one seems entirely feasible for the main Pokémon games, rivaling popular gimmicks like Terra Pokémon and Mega Evolutions in terms of creativity and aesthetic appeal.
However, as one Pokémon fan pointed out, having Ability Forms in a Pokémon VGC tournament would be a nightmare, stating that “It’s a cool concept, but not competitive. You’d definitely know the abilities of every Pokémon you encounter,” but still praised the idea as “great.”
It’s unlikely, but not impossible, that we’ll see Ability Forms in a mainline Pokémon game in the near future, and the arrival of Pokémon Legends ZA could see the return of fan-favorite Mega Evolutions, raising the possibility of new and original takes on popular creatures.
