Maharashtra Elections
Maharashtra elections were held in five phases at over 98,000 polling stations between April 19 and May 20. The state recorded an overall voter turnout of 61.33 per cent across the five phases.
The seat allocation arrangement caused great controversy.
Negotiations on seat allocation continued and were concluded just before the polls, although both the Mahyuti Party and the Maha Vikas Aghadi Party had refrained from announcing candidates due to internal disputes.
Of the opposition MVA alliance, the Shiv Sena (UBT) contested the maximum number of seats in 21, followed by the Indian National Congress with 17 and the NCP (SP) with 10. In the ruling Mahayuti, the BJP fielded 28 candidates, followed by Shinde-led Sena with 15, Ajit Pawar-led NCP with four and ally RSP with one.
Important battles
Key battles were in Beed between BJP leader Pankaja Munde and NCP (SP)’s Bajrang Sonawane, and in Solapur between Congress MP Praniti Shinde, daughter of former Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, and BJP’s Ram Satpute. Kolhapur royal Shahu Chhatrapati and Udayanraj Bhosale, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, ran as candidates for the Kolhapur and Satara constituencies as Congress and BJP nominees respectively.
In Mumbai, Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Uddhav Thackeray’s faction are going head-to-head in three of the six assembly seats – Mumbai South, Mumbai North West and Mumbai South Central. Ujjwal Nikam, a prominent lawyer and new BJP politician, is contesting from the Mumbai North Central seat against Varsha Gaikwad of the Mumbai National Congress Party. Eknath Shinde’s son and incumbent MP Shrikant Shinde is seeking a third term from Karan.
