KALAMAZOO, Michigan — Police are urging people to stop using water guns, known as “Orbees,” after a recent surge in people driving around and shooting at others with them.
Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Safety said officers have noticed a “disturbing trend” of groups targeting unsuspecting residents in city neighborhoods with Orbees water beads.
Police say this is a new trend in Kalamazoo, but has occurred in other cities in recent years.
Some toy water guns are modified to look like real firearms. Anyone caught illegally firing or possessing one can be arrested and charged with assault, disturbing the peace, and possession of an imitation firearm.
Two toy water guns were found during a traffic stop last week. The 20-year-old driver also had a real gun in his vehicle, which he also illegally possessed. Police said the driver was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail.
On Wednesday, June 26, officers responded to the 1400 block of Northwest Nedzi Avenue for a report of a man driving along the roadway who had been hit in the face by one of Orbees water beads.
Officers located the suspects and identified two boys involved in the incident, ages 12 and 14. Two water guns were seized and police released a photo of one, shown above. Police say the criminal assault case has been presented to the Kalamazoo District Attorney’s Office and will be reviewed.
Police also released body camera footage showing officers finding a toy gun in the vehicle.
KDPS said officers are aware these toys may be used for legitimate recreational purposes, but to avoid getting into trouble, police strongly encourage use only with other participants.
