Former Southampton defender Francis Benali spoke about Sunday’s Championship play-off final. Leeds Football Daily 72+ Podcast:
“If you look at the league standings, there’s no question of third versus fourth. I’m very excited about this game, I’m very excited.”
“I think it will be a very tough game for Southampton because they have won both home and away games in the league, but I think games like this are completely one-offs.”
“There may be a bit of a psychological element after winning these two games all season, but we know this is something special and a big prize for both teams.
“It’s going to be a match that everyone will want to sit down and watch. I think it’s going to be nothing but a high-quality, exciting match. We could be in for a true classic.”
Leeds beat Norwich 4-0 at Elland Road to book their place in the play-off final, while Southampton beat West Brom at St Mary’s.
For the season as a whole, Saints outscored their Wembley Stadium opponents 87 to 81, but also conceded 20 more points (63 to 43).
“I think Leeds have a real menace about them, they are dangerous,” Benali said. “We saw what they did against Norwich, they can overpower teams.
“The Saints are going to have to be at their best to beat them on Sunday.
“The mindset and ability to handle the situation as a player and as a coach will have a big impact on the outcome.”
“I think Russell Martin has done a great job. There’s a real identity to their game and it’s been a lot of fun to watch. His connection with the supporters, players and staff, there’s something really positive here. ” on the south coast.
