The Miami Dolphins agreed to a deal with safety Marcus Maye on Monday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been announced.

Maye was released by New Orleans in March as a cost-saving measure after two seasons with the Saints, where he recorded 97 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions.

A second-round draft pick by the New York Jets out of the University of Florida in 2017, Maye established himself as one of the most consistent players at his position during his first five NFL seasons with the Jets, recording eight interceptions, five forced fumbles and 4.5 sacks in his career.

He recorded the longest interception return of the 2018 season, when he intercepted then-Denver quarterback Case Keenum’s pass in the end zone on the final play of the game and returned it 104 yards before being caught and tackled at the 1-yard line.

Maye missed three games last season after being suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy following a car crash in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2021 and his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.

Maye wasn’t the only safety the Dolphins acquired this offseason. Miami signed former Bills safety Jordan Poyer to a one-year contract when free agency began in March.
