Afghanistan confirms participation in 2025 Champions Trophy, big boost for Pakistan: Report

Afghanistan has confirmed its participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, according to reports.

Key highlights

  1. Pakistan will host the 2025 Champions Trophy.
  2. Pakistan has not hosted an ICC event since 1996.
  3. India are yet to confirm their participation in the Champions Trophy.

As a major boost, Pakistan Cricket Board Has been approved Afghanistan from now on ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan We are planning to host the Champions Trophy next year.

The Champions Trophy is the first major tournament to be held on Pakistani soil since the country co-hosted the 1996 ODI World Cup with Pakistan. India Afghanistan Cricket Board president Mirwais Ashraf and CEO Naseeb Khan attended the ICC’s annual board meeting and reportedly met the president of Sri Lanka’s Cricket Board. “Afghanistan have conveyed to the chairman that they are looking forward to sending a team to Pakistan as they will be taking part in the Champions Trophy for the first time,” a PCB source told PTI.

There has been controversy surrounding India’s participation in the Champions Trophy as the team has not toured the neighbouring country since participating in the 2008 Asia Cup.

At India’s insistence, it was made clear that India played all its matches in the last Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the final decision on participation in the Champions Trophy would be taken by the Ministry of External Affairs.

A PCB source told PTI: “The PCB has done everything that was required of them as the organisers of the Champions Trophy. They have submitted a draft schedule and format for the tournament and have also submitted a budget for the tournament.”

“It is up to the ICC to decide how quickly the schedule for the Champions Trophy will be circulated, discussed and finalised. In its proposed schedule, the PCB has proposed to host all India’s matches, including the semi-finals (if India qualify) and the final, in Lahore.”

Another source revealed to PTI: “The PCB has written to the ICC regarding tax formalities, venue selection and government approval for the Indian team to be in Pakistan for this mega event.”
