On the other side of Williams’ garage, it was an eventful afternoon for Shanghai Sgt. After making some changes to the car, the American started the race from the pit lane, but quickly entered the final stages of a hectic Grand Prix that included a virtual safety car period followed by two full safety car phases halfway through. In the middle of it, I found myself in the middle of a race.

Sargent was handed a 10-second time penalty for overtaking Nico Hulkenberg under safety car conditions, and the incident occurred just as Hulkenberg was exiting the pit lane. The 23-year-old finished last in the event in 17th place.

“To be honest, the first half of the race was pretty good,” Sargent reflected after the race. “I think we felt like we were in a really good situation, especially on the medium tires. I think we were in a pretty good position and in a pretty good position.
