NDA candidate Om Birla was elected Speaker of the Lower House of India for a second consecutive term.
After the NDA decided to re-nominate Om Birla for the post, the Indian Union fielded Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate.
The election for Speaker will also determine the election for the Deputy Speaker’s post if the BJP decides not to leave the latter post vacant.
Active meetings and consultations were held on Tuesday between members of the NDA, BJP and the Indian Union.
The BJP called for an “agreement” on the deputy speaker post but avoided making a clear statement on the opposition’s demand for the post, resulting in a stalemate and ultimately forcing the Indian National Congress to field eight-term MP Suresh.
