Team USA picked up four wins on Monday night as every boxer advanced to the medal round and earned at least a bronze medal at the 2024 World Boxing U19 Championships.
Lorenzo Patricio (Waianae, Hawaii) In the first match of the day, Team USA started the competition in the 50kg division. Patricio defeated Japan’s Seiya Nakayam 4-0. Patricio will face India’s Rishi Singh on October 30th. The winner will advance to the final and face either Germany’s Mohamed Al Manousi or England’s Thomas Vallee.
Patricio was followed by two dominant performances. Joseph Awinongya (Juliet, Illinois) and Ilya Lugo (Marietta, Georgia). Awinongya He was too strong and powerful for Australia’s Conor Annarsson, who won by RSC in the first round, and the referee ended the bout after receiving three eight counts.
Lugo took rounds to check on his opponent, but in the second round he turned around violently and the referee stopped the fight, ending the fight. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight as Lugo landed a number of overhead shots and dealt Italian Cristian Salsilli such a powerful blow.
Awinonya and Lugo will both compete in the medal round on October 30th and will be hoping for a similar result and a ticket to the finals.
Rishon Sims (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) The Americans put things to rest with a thrilling victory over Germany’s Ellis Andi Lusztak. Sims won a split 3-2 decision and advanced to the medal round. The American boxer has his sights set on gold and is just two wins away. On October 30th, he will face Nobeki Tomokino of Australia.
violet lopez (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Malachi RoSS (Grandview, Missouri) also competed today, but was not as good as them and was eliminated from the 2024 World Boxing U19 Championship.

USA Boxing will be led by National Development Coach Chad Wigle (Colorado Springs, Colorado). Wigle will be assisted by three assistant coaches: Danilo Garcia (Oakland, California), Edward Fontenot (Fayetteville, North Carolina), and Blanca Gutierrez (Pacifica, California).
