The 5th Annual Political Dialogue of the Initiative for Coal Regions in Transition will take place in Velenje, Slovenia, from 11-12 July. The event is jointly hosted by the European Commission, the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development of Slovenia and the Municipality of Velenje. The event will bring together stakeholders from all EU coal, peat, lignite and oil shale regions (Coal+Regions) to assess progress (since the initiative’s launch in 2018) and discuss the common challenges they face in today’s rapidly changing energy landscape. Discussions at the event will be facilitated by the following high-level speakers:

  • Maros Šefčovič Executive Vice-President of the European Commission (European Green Deal, Inter-institutional Relations and Foresight)
  • Alexander Yevšek Minister of Cohesion and Regional Development of the Republic of Slovenia
  • Peter Darmell Mayor of Velenje

The opening session will celebrate 5 years of transition in the EU Coal+ region and feature a discussion on the industrial and green transition witnessed in the EU Coal+ region, followed by an exhibition on brownfields, industrial infrastructure and coal mines that have been transformed into business districts, energy hubs and places of cultural importance. A dedicated session will focus on tackling energy poverty in coal regions and empowering citizens for the energy transition, followed by site visits in the afternoon.

Day 2 will include sessions on transitioning district heating systems in coal+ regions and social and inclusive transition in coal+ regions. Find out more in the full agenda.

We look forward to welcoming you in Velenje!
