The 77th Cannes Film Festival concluded on Saturday at the Grand Théâtre Lumiere on the French Riviera. Anora It won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest award.
A comedy drama directed by Sean Baker. Starring Mikey Madison (Something better, One Upon a Time in Hollywood) tells the story of a New York stripper who gets more than she bargained for when she marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Baker is the first American director to win the Palme d’Or since Terrence Malick won it for Apollo 11. Tree of Life In 2011.
While accepting his award, Baker spoke from the stage about the importance of the moviegoing experience. “Watching a movie with other people in a movie theater is one of those great communal experiences,” Baker said. “We share our laughter, our sadness, our anger, our fears, and hopefully, our catharsis with friends and strangers. So I would say the future of film is where it began in the movie theater.”
Last year’s winner of this prestigious award was Justin Triet. Anatomy of a Fall Starring Sandra Hüller.
Barbie Director Greta Gerwig served as jury president. Killer of the Flower Moon Actress Lily Gladstone. The jury selected the winner from 22 films in the main competition category.

“I think this experience will forever change me as a filmmaker,” Gerwig said at the jury’s closing press conference.
“I was really lucky to be with this group of artists,” Gladstone says, “and we don’t always agree, and I learned from different perspectives.”
Winner
Also receiving an award was Miguel Gomez, who won the Best Manager award. The Grand TourFemale actors in musical comedies Emilia Perez Best Actress awards went to Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldana, Carla Sofia Gascón and Selena Gomez, while Best Actor went to Jesse Plemons. Kindness types; Coralie Farge wins best screenplay material.
Emilia Perez It also won the Jury Prize. Everything we imagine is light won the Grand Prix, and the Camera d’Or for Best Newcomer went to the Film Armanddirected by Halfdan Ulman Tonder. Nebojsa Sliepčević won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film. The man who couldn’t be silentA special award was given to Mohammed Rasoulof. Sacred Fig Seed.
Shortly after Cannes selected Rasoulof’s film for this year’s competition, the festival was overshadowed by the Iranian government’s indictment of Rasoulof for anti-regime propaganda. The thriller focuses on a Tehran Revolutionary Court judge battling paranoia amid violent political protests. Rasoulof was sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as being caned and fined.
Cast and crew were interrogated. Rasoulof was pressured to withdraw the film’s release but managed to flee to Germany. He attended the film’s world premiere on Friday, where it received a 12-minute standing ovation. North American rights were bought by US distributor Neon.
This year, the festival awarded honorary Palme d’Ors to three people: actress Meryl Streep, Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli and producer-director George Lucas.
