Srinagar: Rifleman Mohit Rathour was killed and a major and three other soldiers were injured in a random attack by Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) on an Indian forward post during an operation against terrorist groups trying to cross the border at Kamkari in Machar area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir early on Saturday. A Pakistani intruder was killed in a counter-attack by the Indian side.

The attack took the death toll in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir this month to 12. Previous fatalities included Naik (Gunner) Dilwar Khan near the Line of Control in Kupwara on July 24 and Lt. Naik Subhash Chander in Poonch district on July 23. On July 15, a captain and three soldiers of 10 Rashtriya Rifles were killed in Doda district, while five soldiers of 22 Garhwal Rifles were killed in an ambush on a two-truck patrol in Kathua district on July 8.

Official sources said the BAT, comprising Pakistani soldiers and terrorists, frequently provides covering fire to infiltrators trying to cross the heavily secured Line of Control.

In the latest attack, two or three Pakistani soldiers took advantage of poor weather and visibility to cross the Line of Control and attack an army post with grenades and close-range gunfire. The ensuing firefight lasted for several hours, leaving two soldiers critically injured, one of whom later died at a military hospital in Srinagar. The other wounded soldier is reportedly in stable condition.

“This is part of a pattern of similar infiltration attempts, actively aided and abetted by Pakistani troops exploiting dense jungle and poor visibility conditions. These attempts have always been thwarted by vigilant Indian troops,” an Indian army spokesman said.

Security has been stepped up in Jammu and Kashmir following a recent increase in terror attacks, particularly in the Jammu region. According to PTI, the government has deployed two BSF battalions, consisting of over 2,000 personnel, to the union territory, who are currently engaged in anti-Maoist operations.
