Modi’s BJP retains power in Indian state bordering China
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has won the regional vote in Arunachal Pradesh, a state bordering China, while a local party swept to power in Sikkim, a Himalayan state, officials and politicians said on Sunday.
Provincial elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim were held on April 19, simultaneously with the first phase of the national polls.
The BJP comfortably retained power in Arunchal Pradesh by winning 46 of the 60 seats.
Modi on social media X said the people of Arunachal Pradesh had given “an unequivocal mandate to politics of development”.
A senior BJP politician Ashok Singhal said the results were a “curtain raiser” ahead of national election results that will be declared on Tuesday.

Arunachal edu minister”s defeat to NCP greenhorn surprises BJP
The defeat of Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister and Yachuli MLA Taba Tedir was a surprise for the BJP, which won 46 out of 60 seats in the state’s assembly election. Tedir lost to newcomer and NCP candidate Toko Tatung by just 228 votes.
Tedir, a retired technocrat, entered politics in 2019, winning his seat uncontested. Dr. Nani Bath, a political science professor at Rajiv Gandhi University, said Tedir lost because Christians voted against him.
Tatung, an entrepreneur-turned-politician, secured the seat with the support of young voters and a promise for change, according to an NCP supporter.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in Arunachal Pradesh after registering a huge victory in the assembly elections, Chief Minister Pema Khandu termed it a “historic day” and said that it shows “pro-incumbency” for the state government.
The Arunachal Pradesh CM thanked the people of the state and said they have voted for the development that has taken place in the state under BJP.
Speaking to ANI, Pema Khandu said, “This is a historic day for Arunachal Pradesh, especially for the BJP. The party has set a new record in these Assembly elections. In 2019, we won 41 seats and in 2024 we have won 46 seats.”

Pema Khandu: Music and sports lover who brought BJP to power in bordering Arunachal
Pema Khandu, a sports enthusiast and music aficionado, has emerged as a tall leader in Arunachal Pradesh over the years, especially after a constitutional crisis in 2016 that led to the imposition of president’s rule.
Khandu was also regarded as a strategist who, through political manoeuvring, brought the BJP to power for the first time in the northeastern state bordering China.
The BJP on Sunday returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row, as the party won 46 seats in the 60-member assembly.
Khandu’s political odyssey began amid a personal tragedy. The untimely demise of his father, former chief minister Dorjee Khandu, in a helicopter crash in 2011, thrust him under the spotlight.

BJP returns to power in Arunachal, secures 40 seats in 60-member assembly
The BJP on Sunday returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row, as the party won 37 seats in the 60-member assembly and secured majority, Election Commission officials said.
Counting of votes is underway for 50 seats for which elections were held in the northeastern state along with Lok Sabha polls on April 19. The rest 10 seats were won by the saffron party uncontested.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu is one of the 10 candidates who won unopposed.

Independent candidate wins Khonsa East seat
Independent candidate Wanglam Sawin won the Khonsa East assembly constituency defeating his nearest rival Kamrang Tesia of the BJP by a margin of 2,216 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.
Counting of votes for 50 assembly seats in the northeastern state began at 6 am on Sunday.
Sawin had won the seat in the 2019 Assembly elections on a BJP ticket. He was denied a saffron party ticket this time and contested the elections as an independent.

The ruling BJP in Arunachal Pradesh was leading in 33 assembly seats while the National People’s Party (NPEP) was ahead in six constituencies, according to the Election Commission of India.
Counting of votes for 50 assembly seats in the northeastern state began at 6 am on Sunday.
The BJP had already won 10 seats unopposed in the 60-member assembly, elections for which were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in the first phase on April 19.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading in four seats, while the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) is leading in three.
The Congress is ahead in one seat while in two constituencies independents are leading after the third round of counting.
Despite rain across the state, hundreds of supporters of various political parties were seen standing near the counting centres.

BJP set to sweep Arunachal for second consecutive time; Khandu likely to continue as CM
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Arunachal Pradesh is all set to sweep the assembly polls for a second consecutive term and incumbent chief minister Pema Khandu will continue in the post, party officials stated on Sunday as counting of votes continue.
Ten BJP candidates including Khandu and his deputy Chowna Mein had won their seats unopposed and polling took place in the rest 50 seats on April 19.
According to the Election Commission, till 9:45 am, nearly four hours after counting started at 6:00 am, BJP candidates were leading in 33 of the 50 seats where voting had taken place.
Candidates from National Peoples Party (NPP), which is a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at Centre, were leading in 6 seats. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates were leading in 4 seats, and People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA)
in 3 and Independents leading in 2 seats each. Trends for the other two seats were not available.

BJP expelled 27 disgruntled leaders for contesting polls against party candidates in Arunachal
The Arunachal BJP unit on Tuesday expelled 27 disgruntled party leaders who contested the April 19 elections in the state against the party’s official candidates after being denied tickets.
Party’s state disciplinary action committee chairman Tarh Tarak said the leaders have been expelled for six years.
The expelled politicians had contested on the tickets of the National People’s Party which Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma heads, the Nationalist Congress Party, the People’s Party of Arunachal and as independent candidates.
