Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Admire Party leader Arvind Kejriwal will be released today, June 21, after the city’s Luce Avenue court granted him bail. ₹10 lakh bond yesterday.
Special Judge Niayi Bindu granted bail in a money laundering case linked to the now defunct Excise Policy, also known as the Delhi Liquor Excise Policy Scam.
The court, however, imposed a condition before granting relief to Kejriwal that he should not disrupt the investigation or influence witnesses. The vacationing judge also directed Kejriwal to appear before it whenever required and cooperate with the investigation.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will file a case in the Delhi High Court today against the trial court’s verdict in the matter, ANI reported citing official sources.
AAP response: “The truth cannot be defeated.”
Welcoming the court’s decision, the AAP said, “The truth may be confused but it will not be defeated. Rejecting all the BJP’s ED objections, the noble court has granted bail to the Delhi Chief Minister.”
Welcoming the court’s verdict, Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atish posted “Satyamev Jayate” on X. Senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha also hailed the “victory of justice”.
“The truth may face difficulties but it will never be defeated. This is a victory for justice and a victory for truth. I am eternally grateful to the honourable court for granting bail to Arvind Kejriwal,” Chadha said.
AAP supporters also celebrated by bursting firecrackers outside Kejriwal’s residence in Delhi.
Opposition says bail is ‘long overdue’
Also reacting to the news, opposition leaders said the court’s decision was “long overdue.”
“Congratulations Kejriwal, he has been released on bail. It is long overdue. From the prosecution’s point of view, there is no need to keep him in jail now that the elections are over! The justice system is unfair!” Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal said on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“The release on bail of Delhi’s popular Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is another victory for truth. The strength and unity of the ‘Indian Union’ will liberate the people of India from the painful rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Soon India will have a coalition government,” Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said.
He further alleged that the ED’s statement is based on lies. “At a time like this, release of Arvind Kejriwal from jail will strengthen democracy. This is good news for the country and the people of Delhi. What ED has said so far is based on lies. This is a baseless and false case created to implicate Kejriwal. #ArvindKejriwal #AAP #Delhi,” he wrote on X.
