Her son confirmed that Bhosle died in Mumbai after being admitted to hospital following a heart attack

Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92, marking the end of an era in Bollywood music.

According to Indian media, her son confirmed that Bhosle died in Mumbai after being admitted to hospital following a heart attack. With a career spanning more than eight decades and over 12,000 recorded songs, she became one of the most recognisable voices in Indian cinema.

Her repertoire included celebrated tracks such as Dum Maro Dum, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja and Mehndi Hai Rachnewali, alongside soundtracks for films including Teesri Manzil, Caravan, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Ijaazat, Saagar, Umrao Jaan and many others.

Her work earned international recognition, including the tribute song Brimful of Asha and collaborations with artists such as Boy George.

Born in Maharashtra in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, she began singing at an early age, recording her first song in 1943. She later emerged as a leading voice in Hindi cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, working with composers such as OP Nayyar and RD Burman, with whom she shared a long creative partnership.

She was the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, another towering figure in Indian music. Despite frequent comparisons, Bhosle established a distinct identity with a bold and dynamic style.

Throughout her life, she continued to perform, collaborate internationally and engage with audiences, describing music as central to her existence.

Her career is marked by numerous accolades, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000), the Padma Vibhushan (2008), and a Guinness World Record for the most recorded artist in music history.
