At least two people were killed and multiple others injured in a shooting at a Juneteenth celebration at a park in Round Rock, Texas, on Saturday night, police said.
An altercation broke out between two groups during the event at Old Settlers Park and “someone pulled out a gun and began firing,” Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said at a news conference.
The event was crowded at the time and “multiple casualties were reported,” the police chief said. Chief Banks said officers at the event responded to the scene and began rescue efforts.
Police said no suspects were in custody as of early Sunday morning and it was unclear exactly how many people were shot. “The investigation is ongoing,” Banks said.
The chief did not provide details about any injuries, but Austin-Travis County EMS previously said emergency personnel transported six people, including two children, to a local trauma facility “with potentially serious injuries.”
“It’s just heartbreaking that a family came out to enjoy an evening and their lives have been changed forever because of someone who has no regard for the lives of others. It’s just so sad,” Ms Banks said.
A Juneteenth festival was held Saturday night at Old Settlers Park, featuring musical performances by a variety of artists, according to the Facebook page of the Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department. Round Rock is about 20 miles north of Austin.
Banks said the park will be closed the morning of Father’s Day.
