Day two of the 2024 Junior Pan American Championships in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, was another double-win day for Argentina, while the U.S. and Canadian women’s teams beat Chile and Mexico, respectively. On the men’s side, Canada and the U.S. played out in a scoreless draw, while Chile defeated Mexico, 5-1.
Women: Argentina (3) – Uruguay (0)
The Argentina women’s team beat Uruguay 3-0 in a much tighter match than the previous day. Uruguay had to settle for a scoreless early game, but finally conceded just before halftime. Catalina Stamaty picked up a deflected ball into the circle after a long pass in the middle of the pitch. Stamaty found space behind and calmly slotted the ball past an out-of-position Uruguayan keeper, Miranda Martinez. Less than a minute later, Argentina was in the circle from the right baseline. After one chance after another was thwarted, Stamaty scored a second goal from close range off a rebound to give Argentina a 2-0 lead at halftime. Valentina Ferrola added a third in the 52nd minute.and Ferrola stepped into the circle with little space but no pressure and scored a goal a minute later, curling it past goalkeeper Francisca Guagni to put Argentina at the top of the women’s group.
Women: USA (4) – Chile (2)
U.S. captain Hope Rose put the U.S. ahead 1-0 in the first quarter with a deflected shot straight from a penalty corner. Chile responded quickly, with Jacinda Solari’s penalty corner sweep tying the teams. Neither team scored in the second quarter, but the U.S. added two more goals, one each from Jans Kroon and Daniela Mendez Trendler and another from a penalty corner. Ignatia Orellana added a consolation goal from Chile with a great individual move to lift two U.S. sticks and beat past U.S. goalkeeper Natalie McKenna.
Women’s: Mexico (1) – Canada (2)
Canada’s Wolfpups earned their first win of the tournament with a tough 2-1 victory over Mexico. After 26 minutes of back-and-forth play, the deadlock was broken as Mexico tried to move the ball into their own circle. The ball fell perfectly to Canadian forward Stella Goddard-Despot, who raced out in front of Mexico keeper Mariel Pereyda and poked the ball home for the opening goal of the game. Canada extended their lead with a penalty corner in the 49th minute.Number In the 54th minute, Kenzie Guirgis’ sweeping shot bounced off the backboard. Mexico fought back, scoring a goal on a penalty corner rebound in the 54th minute.Number They pushed for about a minute, but despite pushing hard they couldn’t tie the score.
Men’s: Mexico (1) – Chile (5)
The men’s match between Mexico and Chile was split into two halves, with no goals scored in the first two quarters and just six in the second. Both teams had chances to score, including multiple penalty corners, but solid defense and some key saves led to a Chile goal rush and an exciting finish. Sebastian Wolanski scored three penalty corner goals in a three-minute span to put Chile up 3-0 in the third quarter. Mexico next scored from a penalty corner, scoring on a rebound by Rodrigo Silva. Additional goals from Thomas Hasson and Axel Stein late in the fourth quarter gave Chile a 5-1 victory for the second time in their history.
Men’s: Argentina (12) – Brazil (0)
Argentina continued their goal spree, scoring 12 goals against Brazil to secure six points in the men’s pool play. Argentina wasted no time, as penalty corner ace Nicolas Rodrigues scored the first of his three goals in the second minute of the match. Less than a minute later, Bruno Correa made it 2-0 with a close-range goal. The goals continued to come, as Marco Aguirre Gomes Corta scored a hat trick for his fifth goal of the tournament, Lorenzo Somaini added two more goals and three others added one each. Brazil kept up the effort, with goalkeepers Leonardo Santos and Fabio Ecleziano providing plenty of action.
Men’s: Canada (0) – USA (0)
The match between North American rivals USA and Canada, which ended in a 0-0 draw after 60 minutes, was a fast-paced, energetic affair. Both teams displayed similar structures, with strong passing distribution and movement in the backfield, and the ability to exploit openings through the opponent’s disciplined forward press. While the USA looked to be on the offensive against Canada, the home team’s defense did a good job of minimizing the burden on their keeper.
