KARACHI/ISLAMABAD:

An alleged attack on the vehicle of a state minister by some protestors in Thatta district of Sindh elicited an angry reaction from the PML-N led federal government, which urged the PPP led provincial government to investigate the matter and take the perpetrators to task.

Protestors belonging to nationalist parties of Sindh pelted tomatoes and potatoes on the motorcade of State Minister for Religious Affairs Kheal Das Kohistani while it was passing through Thatta on Saturday.

The protesters, staging a protest against the Cholistan canal project, also chanted slogans against the PML-N led federal government.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif telephoned Kohistani and strongly condemned the “attack”. He assured the state minister of a thorough investigation into the incident. “The attack on the public representatives is unacceptable. The persons involved in the incident would be given exemplary punishment,” he said.

Minister for Information Atta Tarar also took notice of the incident and declared it “an attack”. He also sought details of the incident from Sindh Inspector General Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon and a report from the federal interior secretary.

He stated that attacks on public representatives are intolerable. He also called on the Sindh government to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the incident and bring those involved to justice.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the attack on Kohistani’s vehicle and strongly condemned the act in the strongest terms. In his statement, he said that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.

The CM directed the DIG Hyderabad to immediately arrest the miscreants involved in the attack and submit a report. Shah also sought a detailed report on the incident from the DIG.
