Van Buren High School students will soon have the opportunity to learn automation technology and earn college credits through a partnership with Arkansas Tech University’s Ozark campus.

Participants will complete 15 credits in Electrical Fundamentals, Introduction to Industrial Automation and Introduction to Industrial Robotics and Programmable Controllers. The courses will be offered to Van Buren High School students beginning in fall 2024.

“These courses are designed to provide a foundational understanding of automation principles and practices and prepare students to excel in this high-demand career field,” said ATU-Ozark President Dr. Sheila Jacobs. “At ATU-Ozark, we are committed to promoting innovation and excellence in education, and this partnership with the Van Buren School District demonstrates our commitment to partnering with K-12 schools to advance workforce development in the region and state.”

Instruction will be provided by Stacey McCollough, automation technology program chair and instructor at ATU-Ozark, Cody Harkness, automation technology instructor at ATU-Ozark, and Kenneth Beeler, air conditioning and refrigeration program chair and instructor at ATU-Ozark.

Dr. Joe McLean will serve as the cooperating instructor representing the Van Buren School District.

Upon completing 15 credits, Van Buren High School students will receive a certificate of proficiency in Control Fundamentals, which can also be credited toward an associate degree from ATU-Ozark.

“The Van Buren School District is proud to partner with ATU-Ozark to provide this unique educational opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Harold Jeffcoat, Superintendent of the Van Buren School District. “By earning college credit and industry-level certification in a fast-growing career field, students will be better prepared to transition into their respective colleges and careers after graduation. We thank ATU-Ozark for partnering with our district in this effort and look forward to many more creative partnerships in the future.”
