As Honolulu Star-Advertiser reporter Kevin Knodell noted on November 12 (“Hawaii plays central role in ‘Pacific century'”), the East-West Center, based at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, continues to play a role in America’s “Pacific pivot.” But the EWC is much more than a place for diplomats to bump fists and shape foreign policy. As I discovered during a recent visit to one of the world’s newest countries, Timor-Leste (also known as Timor-Leste), the scale of technology and expertise being transferred from Hawaii to Pacific nations as far away as the Pacific is impressive and inspiring. During my stay…
I started my summer reading with Emily Wilson’s recent translation of The Iliad. Having read her Odyssey with gusto a few years ago, I needed a Homeric way to escape the news. Who needs a beach book to read on the eve of a political apocalypse when you can enjoy an ancient epic poem that describes a brutal war that leads to the downfall of a glorious civilization? Perhaps you understand my feelings. I want this election season to be over. I don’t mean to vent anymore, but Donald J. Trump’s authoritarian shamelessness seems to know no bounds. I am…

June 26, 07:43 (IST)Parliamentary broadcast: Parliamentary broadcast means not only oaths but also slogansThe second day of swearing-in in the Indian Lok Sabha was a day of religious prayers and farce. The BJP’s repeated chants of “Jai Shri Ram” caused much laughter, while enthusiasm in the ruling camp was dampened by the Samajwadi Party’s introduction of its MP from Ayodhya (Faizabad), a bitter defeat for the BJP. The chants dominated the day’s proceedings, but AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s praise of Palestine after the swearing-in caused a belated BJP protest, sparking a minor ruckus. The opposition protested that BJP’s Bareilly MP…
The American worker is not okay.News about the “silent retiree” spread like wildfire in 2022, but since the epidemic lost steam, things have been getting worse in the American workplace. According to a Gallup survey of US employees conducted over the years, workplace engagement has fallen to an 11-year low. In February, only 30% of US workers said they were fully engaged in their jobs. Many studies are being conducted to try to understand the causes of this deepening crisis. Is it because of remote work? Layoffs? Is it due to declining employer loyalty? One possibility that’s less widely discussed is…
Getty Images The 2024 NBA Draft has begun. The first 30 picks were made in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, with the Atlanta Hawks clinching the No. 1 overall pick. Despite the overall cryptocurrency market showing signs of recovery today, Ripple-backed asset XRP continues to experience volatile price fluctuations. While Bitcoin and altcoins such as ETH, SOL, and BNB have risen, XRP has fallen. The reason behind this price drop is a large amount of whale speculation, with 52 million XRP placed on two CEXs.
